The longest 25 miles ever
Last night after work I met J downtown for what should have been a nice easy ride. It was hot though. It was 101 on the bus coming home so I had been on a hot bus for 50 minutes, then waited outside in my car for J for another 15 so I was beat before we started. It took almost 2 hours with all the stopping for water, stopping to refill water bottles, just plain stopping. We did out and back from Cajun's to the end of the NLR side of the River Trail and back with one trip up Ft. Roots . It was a good climb, I am still figuring out that the first turn on that road is the hardest for me and I need to gear appropriately so I can keep up with J. Can't believe how exhausted I am/was. Ran into some friends on the way over Big Dam Bridge going out- that's always fun. I heard this familiar voice up ahead so I yell "Is that Aaron up there? " Sure nuff it was. I thought we'd be the only idiots riding in 100 degree heat but there were LOTS of idiots out riding, running and blading. Man, people amaze me sometimes.
Since this is a cycling post I thought I'd throw in this little ditty that J already posted on his blog but whatever...I think this video should go viral and make our Sarah a bigger star than she is already. Watch for her smiling face coming across the suspension bridge. See if you can see the blood from our knuckles on the suspension chains too.

Big Weekend
First, Bike Porn: This is my new Anthem. Which I "hate". Passionately. With every muscle fiber of my being. More on that later.
Friday was rest day- went in to pay for the bike, got fitted and took the small one to the doctor. Spent an hour or so in the yard weeding.
Friday night Joe took me to see BB King and Willie Nelson at the amphitheater on the river. BB was much like the last time we saw him, a lot of talk making us wish for more music. What he did play was great. Willie rocked. What'd you expect? We were good, no beer, one hot dog each and shared a cup of french fries.
Got up early and drove to Arkadelphia for a swim clinic. I was thoroughly intimidated. I did not have the nerve to tell the coach or fellow attendees that I hadn't even been in a pool (except to cool off after laying out or to go on a water slide) in about 2 years. Ouch. 99% of the attendees were serious triathletes, full on. The morning was spent in the pool doing 25 meter drills in waves. There were a few times when I got screwed up and either lost my place and sat in the water in the middle of the pool trying to collect myself or swallowed water. But I did, or at least tried everything and faked my way thru it. Learned a lot. Then after lunch we headed over to the lake for some open water practice with mass starts and bouy sighting. On the second try of about a 100 yard swim around the bouys I lost my way and ended up way off course and was so beat I had to back stroke. Poor Fred (our race organizing bud who puts on several local du's, tri's and adventure races) was lifeguarding and I think, no I KNOW I scared him. He really thought he was going to have to rescue me but I made it to shore. Most of the girls were pretty cool about it, very encouraging. Some were definitely just irritated that I was there but that's ok. I would be too if I were them. There was a 5K in town that night and a whole group of them were going out to ride the upcoming triathlon bike course THEN doing the run. I barely made it home without passing out. Okay not really. We got home, rested then took a passle of kids to see Dark Knight. It was great.
Today- a close to 14 mile mtb ride, mostly single trak. I still hate the bike. I hated it around all the rolling curves that I usually brake on, I hated it up the hill I have NEVER made before, I hated it on the BMX track. Did I mention I hated it? OMG, so THIS is what a mountain bike is supposed to do?? ROCK ON.

Legs = Toast = noodles?
My legs are so tired. This is a good thing right? After last nights short ride on a supposed rest day, I took it a bit easier on myself because I am going to do a triathlon swim clinic all day on Saturday. Wish me luck, I have trouble not drowning at the kiddie pool. Then I find out that I will have to make a choice to do Raid the Rock Adventure Race OR do the CATS Sprint Tri. They end up being on the same weekend this year. Dangnab it.

Very Expensive Ride
My mountain bike is still in the shop but last night my "sweet" husband decides that he is going to go "borrow" that expensive bike that I've talked myself out of 4 times already so that we can go for a night ride. I need to train, he tells me, if we're going to do a sprint adventure race in August-it will all be about moving fast. 5minutes in he says "how is it?" I say "I hate this bike" "that good?" he says. 20 minutes in and we hit some lowland sweeping trail. Now I really hate this bike. And I hate my husband and my sweet Sarah Smiles for trying to convince me that I need this bike. I thought I'd be awful because honestly, my legs were toast from the outset due to the new Jillian Badass Micheals workouts. But off she went, hit that dirt and climbed herself up some hills. I thought oh I need to avoid that and she just moved. No pedal clipping rocks, no back tire hitting what the front just maneuvered around. She just went. Unlike my usual braking grabfest. I think I just bought a new mountain bike, God help us all.
As we finished the short ride, smiling like a goober, I was composing an email in my head that went something like this:
Dear Sarah, Hate the bike, Hate you, Hate Joe. I'll be in Friday to pay for the damn bike. Bitches.
As luck would have it, we get to our car and what do we see 2 spaces over? The Chainwheel Scion with Sarah in the driver's seat. I got to tell her how much I hated the bike in person. And see her for the first time in about 2 or 3 weeks. DAAAANNNNG. Must say it doesn't hurt to buy things from HOT salespeople. While her husband was ragging her for her redneck sleeves cut off jersey- I didn't notice, I was thinking wow, Sarah's getting some definition in her upper bod. She was already slammin' but this new regime/commitment of hers....watch out!

Lake Water Doesn't Taste Good
As a reward for driving 6.5 hours to Tuscaloosa to pick up the small one, we got to hang out with family and play on the water. And eat.
I know I'll have pictures to post at some point but for now I'm pictureless. Friday night was a chance to catch up with folks. I got to hang with my sisters-in-law, talking trash, gossiping, and drinking beer.
Saturday I ushered J out of bed early- neither of us could sleep- and went out for a run around the lake. It's only about 2.5, maybe a smidge more, but it's rolling hills the whole way. Man the humidity and the beer from the night before did me no favors. Not only did he beat me in by about 10 yards (the same 10 I gave up at the beginning of the run and could never make up) but I really wanted to be able to vomit. Instead I rested a few minutes then did some plyometrics in the driveway. Out on the lake for the remainder of the day. Tried some swimming but had no goggles. The eyesight thing is going to be a problem, I just can not function without correctitve lenses and lake water doesn't work well with contacts. Doesn't work with spray either as I found out when I stupidly agreed to go tubing. I found out 2 years ago that I just don't enjoy it. I'm obviously a glutton for other types of punishment, this just isn't my bag, baby. Went out on the lake for a late afternoon kayak even though arms were sore and tired. Good thing because Sunday morning came and I couldn't convince j to do anything- which made it possible for us to get packed and gone by 9:15 though.
On the way home we stopped at Mud Island in Memphis. We drive by there a number of times each year but never stop. It was okay. The museum was actually better than we expected and if it hadn't been quite as hot, the riverwalk would have been better too.
It's good to be home.

Super Short WO
Didn't really have the time to workout this morning but knew I needed something so as soon as I got up I got the trainer out of the winter closet and rode my bike hard for about 25 minutes. Pouring sweat. So gross. But it got the day started.
Now it's time to head off to pick up the small one from the grandparents. She's been having a blast all week tubing and boating. I'm happy to join her for some of that fun. Might even try to get some experience swimming in the lake.

Ride like the Wind, or maybe a breeze
Sunday we woke to rain. And headaches. So a day of mostly lying on the couch watching TV soon ran into a few minutes of yard work before I realized that THE SUN WAS OUT!! So we headed down to the pool to be lazy for a while longer. During Adult Swim I had J try to check out my floundering again, hoping that I can get a comfortable stroke down in time to do a sprint tri this fall. He fixed a couple of things for me in those short minutes and I can't wait to try it out on open water next weekend.
After a really horrific dinner of chicken and spinach sausages, J loaded up the bikes and we headed down to the River Trail but it was already dusk. We cut the ride short by not trying to get thru the crowd on the bridge but heading down to River Mtn. Road. That climb is just not fun. I really need to do it more often. My top speed was 5.5 mph until the crest where I finally hit about 7 before the flat came and I cruised out to the light trying to spin off the shaking.
This morning J and I both rode our bikes to work. I know it's a short 15+ minute ride but it isn't an easy one. Going home will be so much worse, ending in that Bitch of a climb up Mountain. But I need those hills, they make me stronger. And I'm going to repeat that until I actually believe it.

Gluttony
This is Phillips Grocery in Holly Springs, Mississippi. Yes it is as old and broke down as it looks. Maybe more so. But they had good hamburgers, onion rings and fried pies. Unfortunately that meal was neither the beginning nor the end of my weekend gluttony. It began with a bathroom break in Brinkley. And hashbrowns from Burger King. But not at the same time exactly.
Saturday morning we set out bright and early to meet J's parents halfway between our respective domiciles. That happened to be Holly Springs. Well I had no idea what there was to see or do there but we are always on the lookout for culinary experiences so when meeting for lunch to turn over the youngest snotbag for a week of fun and frivolity with Grandparents and cousins came up, I was on that interwebz thingee lookin for a real experience. That's how I found out about Phillips. Built in 1898 across from a railroad depot, it was a saloon in its former life before finding redemption as a grocery/restaurant in 1948. Character. Old pieced together tables and chairs, vinyl tablecloths, memorabilia and old newspapers on display. And the food wasn't half bad. It was just like my mama's old imperfect round-ISH burgers on soft buns served up with crunchy onion rings (and we sampled some fried shrooms too) and a fried pie that was a bit on the crusty side but the crust was sweet instead of just being doused with powdered sugar after the fact so it wasn't half bad either. I didn't get to bite the apple but my peach one was just peachy keen. Snark, that was lame.
THEN-on the way home, at yet another pottie break, J was walking around the store with a Meat Stick. Oh loverly Meat Sticks. I had to have one too. I even showed him how for only 20 cents more, he could get the big thick one, the messing with Sasquatch one. And I bought a king size 3 musketeer. Which is really just 2 of them in a long package so I LET J have one of them. Then at home we sat around with our big guts, eating chips. Then we moved out in public with our guts and drank lots of beer while listening to live music. And had 4th meal from Taco Bell at 1 a.m. Oh you gotta love that! I was in Junk Food heaven. Until I realized that to work it off, I'd have to work out every single day and not eat again till Thursday. Which won't happen. Oh well.

Run Jane Run
Thursday- Run for the bus 3. something miles of hills. I didn't check the temp but I started pouring sweat about 300 yards from the front door and didn't stop till about 10 a.m.
Joe picked me up and we went over to Allsop park because he wanted to get some running in. Ah. Distance unknown, time 20 minutes of full out trail running then I made him turn around and walk back about 5 minutes even though he said he was done. I tried to get him to run again but his glasses kept falling off because he forgot his string thing. Walked a while longer, in the rain, watching the stoller striders.
Stopped at the grocery store and I wanted to eat my way thru there.

Hearing Myself Stalk I mean Talk
I know this was supposed to start out as a way for me to hold myself accountable for actually moving my fat butt, but wouldn't a notebook do the same thing? Why in tarnation would anybody else care whether or not I stunk up my carpool bus or was sweaty enough to ensure that I got a seat row to myself (and that means the ONLY person who got to sit alone), or if I won or lost on the climb to the top and Pinnacle? I'm not that young, but I'm not ready for Depends either and it seems to me that young people aren't the only ones losing their ability to interract face to face. I get irritated with the seeming pervasiveness of cell phones, texting, IM's, AIM, ChatRooms, Email whatever. Then I realize that although I still don't get the necessity of texting, I am as guilty as the 12 year old when it comes to avoiding actual conversation. I'd rather email than phone. Any day. I'd just as soon read everyone else's blog than to suck up my selfish time greed and call or meet for dinner or something just to catch up. I wasn't always this way. I used to really get off on the whole social thing despite always having a phone aversion. Okay the phone aversion started after teenagehood but still. Now I do everything possible from ordering clothes and gear to paying bills to setting up service calls. If I can find a way to do something online and avoid a conversation, by damn I'll do it. Even if it takes longer. Isn't that screwed up?
I think my husband is rubbing off on me. He played along for awhile, even got into planning some of those melees we called parties. These days he is as likely as I to wait till the last second, because sometimes we just can't plan to have free time, and then go-"shouldn't we call so-n-so, maybe we could go out?" There's the round of "well these people are always too busy, these people hate bars and/or don't appreciate live music, these people have little kids and either can't get a sitter or worse, bring them along. J has developed a strong dislike for children. He's gone all crotchity old man. Then we sit on the couch, wander into the office or someone yells "FOOSBALL" and the moment is gone. I suppose it's a darn good thing we enjoy each other's company. Of course, there are lots of people who don't enjoy OUR company so maybe it's better that we just hole up in our hovel and shake our fists at anyone who comes near the door. Then blog about it.
Training?
I'm still having a great deal of difficulty figuring out my need for "training" versus the need to "workout"
Wednesday-busy work day, at the small one's theater camp parent's night until after 8 p.m. but turned the TV on when we finally got home and
pushups 2 x 8
double tricep pulls with resistance band 3 x 10
combo moves: squat with shoulder press 2 x 15 x 8lb
plie squat with side shoulder raise 2 x 15 x 8lb
single arm tricep kickbacks 3 x 10 x 8lb
bent over dumbbell rows 2 x 12 x 8lb, 1 x 8 x 12lb
flys 3 x 10 x 8lb
slow situp warming core 1 min
double crunch x 25
crunch x 25
oblique crunch 2 x 25
Tuesday- work was busy and waited until 9 p.m. to go out for a walk. walked all of 7 minutes until I couldn't take it and started jogging.
walk 7 min
jog 25 min
walk 10 minutes of ugly nasty hills ending in a short uphill jog
Note about sweet J- he stopped to get us dinner because we had less than 1/2 hour between getting off work and needing to be at the theater. He remembered to get me grilled chicken and a baked potato instead of a burger and fries. Damn I love burgers and fries. Damn I love it when he tries to help me not eat them.

Heat
I am rather busy at work so I didn't manage a daytime workout yesterday. I changed clothes before I left work though and as soon as I dropped the small one off at piano I took off for a run. Piano lessons are at a local university so with school being out I had virtually empty sidewalks at my disposal. I have no clue on distance or pace. It felt slow but then it was in the mid 90's so everything feels slow, right? It was a full 30 minutes, whatever the pace.
I tried to make a joke of this story but I'm the only one amused by it apparently. While I was running the winding sidewalk along University Avenue, I see on the sidewalk on the other side of the street, just ahead of me, a man with a cane. And it took me a couple of minutes to catch up and take over. Dang. Molasses can't even catch up to the blind dude. I have to say, I watched him RUN across one intersection. Don't know what that was about, but more power to ya.
At home I did some random light weight and resistance band upper body work while watching TV for about 1/2 hour or so and took 2 very heavy and frisky dogs on a 10 minute stroll.

Time Suckers
Today I spent about 7 1/2 hours over at a friend's house helping her paint up high because she has a touch of vertigo. And I've been promising for weeks. See this house has taken them 2 years to tear apart and rebuild. I really hope they're happy in it when it's done. I think it's really cool and will be such a nice place when it's finished. I never did get to stripping that desk, or sitting by the pool, or ironing the pile of clothes. I did manage about 70 minutes of the History Channels "REVOLUTION" that we recorded and 4 loads of laundry that added to that ironing pile but laundry can be done during commercials, right?
What's this rant about? Yesterday my sister in law posted a comment about how she's impressed that I manage workouts. Honestly sometimes so am I. This comment comes from a hardworking executive single mom to two young girls, one of them very involved in competitive soccer. I myself, made my kid quit her semi competitive softball team because we decided it took too much time away from things we like to do. Not necessarily meaning things SHE likes to do,but it was cutting into our weekends too much and god forbid we can't run ,bike or camp even though she only does one of those things.
Now my S-I-L has had several hobbies in the few years I've known her. She was/is so good at scrapbooking that she has had layouts published in magazines. She's such a good photographer that people have paid good money to have her capture their kids. Both her girls are involved in a sport that while time consuming, is their main hobby. She's very concerned with their school work and makes sure they know it's important.
My limited scrapbooking materials are still in the bag they were in when we moved 3 years ago and I barely know how to work our camera. My little snot bag went from practicing and playing softball several times a week for months on end to playing once or twice a week for a couple of months because J and I couldn't take the time sucking. I did make sure she continued piano lessons though. Music skills-great. Math skills as a by product-even better. Yeah I put her in a private school that supposedly works one grade level ahead but she still skates by somewhere above the middle of her class instead of the straight A's she had in public school. I don't check homework very often and I don't remind if I can help myself. The small one says it's HER job to do her work.
Julia wonders where I find the time and energy to work out and I wonder where she finds the time and energy to be so creative. I've said to her before and I say again- some women can have it all and do it all. I can't. I really think it's a lie perpetuated by women who had NO idea what they were saying. I give up time I could spend on my career or on my kid to go play in the dirt and get sweaty. It's selfish. I wonder what the outcome will be?
I have no hobbies. So what sucks up my time? Why am I always struggling to get everything done?
1) Laundry. I have a sick obsession with it. I can't stand an overflowing laundry basket.
2) Cooking. Why do I see the American lifestyle of eating on the run so negatively? I have no idea. I love eating out. Honest I do. But I love to cook even more. So even on a time pinched night, I'm probably going to spend at least an hour in the kitchen, cooking or cleaning or planning.
3) Finding ways not to sit down. For years, if I could sit in front of a TV for hours on end I was happy. Now, I can't stand it for longer than a movie and bets are I'll have laundry to fold. My brain doesn't really function in a creative way. I can't draw or paint, I'm not a great writer/storyteller, I don't knit, needlepoint or any other cool crafty thing. I think I could be handy around the house but I got in trouble last time I tried to usurp the power that is the drill. My options for self expression are limited. Brute force...not thinking ...that's what I like about running. Biking is different, because it's so engaging-the concentration-it's a different sort of brain cop out.
4) This. I can't believe I just sat here and wrote down all this crap. Those are minutes I won't ever get back. And now neither will you!

My Mountain Bike is Broken, so I climbed one instead
So it seems my mountain bike is not unfixable but a part has to be sent in to the manufacturer to be rebuilt so no riding for a while. I guess that's better than the option I was offered of calling the bike a loss and buying a brand new one. I think Joe is still worried that fixing the old one is the wrong move since the price of bikes seems to be heading up up up with the interest in biking increasing and the cost of EVERYTHING going up from transportation and manufacturing cost increases. Amazing how the price of gas affects things.
Holidays around here usually find us out at Pinnacle. Birthdays, Christmas, Thanksgiving...I think the only major holiday that hasn't seen us at Pinnacle at least once is Easter. Yesterday Joe and I headed over to Pinnacle for a climb. There was a big party in the main parking/park area so we parked farther away at the visitor's center and hopped on the Ouachita Trail to get over to the park. J had said he wasn't feeling quite up to this so I took it easy on him and we walked most of the trail instead of running. Then he took off up the mountain on the rocky sections and I was a full 30 seconds behind him to the top. Darn him. So I had to beat him down. And make him run. We hit the new part of the trail and ran up until the ugly switchbacks started, walked for a while then started running again when it met back up with the Ouachita. I ran him back to the steep steps below the visitor center. I heard him ask " you're just getting your wind aren't you?" then I think there was a cuss word. An afternoon of yard work, cleaning the garage, making homemade individual cheesecakes and cooking dinner left me spent. We didn't even leave the house for fireworks.
This morning J and the small one are accompanying the oldest kid to set up her new apartment in Fayettville. We loaded her up with furniture in a Uhaul. Wow, our garage and storage room seem so much bigger now. I'm headed out to do a little more work stripping a desk that I've been avoiding for weeks and then I'm off to help a friend paint at her new house. If my people aren't back by the time I wear out painting, I'm going to go sit my butt by the pool.
